Cloud Imperium Games says that they want to make a game for the most powerful hardware

Star Citizen, the most gargantuan crowdfunded project in the history of gaming, is being developed as a PC exclusive game, and its devs say that neither the PS4 nor the Xbox One will get it since no console would be able to handle everything they intend to pack in the space opera sim.

While Elite: Dangerous developer Frontier Developments says that they would be stupid not to consider catering to the huge console market, Cloud Imperium Games' Eric Peterson says that neither current- nor old-gen consoles could handle the sheer magnitude of Star Citizen, and as such the team is focusing on the most powerful platform, as an interview with PC-Gaming.it reveals:

"In recent times we have had the feeling that the PC had been a little put aside, and that the games that came out were often ported from console with sub visuals that did not show the potential of the PC. Today's gaming PCs are really formidable, they have more powerful processors, more powerful video cards, and are best in every aspect," Peterson begins.

"Even the new generation of consoles can not hold a candle to, their internal components are already older than what I can now mount on a home PC. We wanted to create a game that showed all the capabilities of today's PCs, and above all, we wanted to create a game for all those who enjoy to assemble really high-end PCs with dual graphics cards and liquid cooling, especially since no game so far has ever allowed to exploit the full potential of such PCs," he explains.

His bold statements are most likely not merely the fancy PR talk we're accustomed to from game publishers, but still, until we see the final product, we can't really pass judgment on Star Citizen.

Considering that Star Citizen has a huge budget, for an independent title, and no strings attached to any platform holders to potentially alter the quality of the end product on PC, as Ubisoft was suspected to have done with Watch Dogs, it's likely that Cloud Imperium Games will do its best to harness the power of high-end PCs.

Crytek's Crysis was similarly advertised as "only possible on PC," and it got successfully ported to last-gen consoles, although the graphics on Crysis 3 were nowhere near the quality attainable on PCs.

Star Citizen is currently scheduled to come out sometime during 2015, and Cloud Imperium Games intends to continue development after the game's release, combining new content with the emergent gameplay content generated by users in-game.
