The race between the autonomous vehicles which competed in the Mojave Desert was won by Stanley, Stanford Racing Team's project.

Saturday, 23 autonomous vehicles went head-to-head over 130 miles of tough desert roads, mountain trails, dry lake beds and tunnels, using only onboard sensors and navigation equipment with no human assistance.

The 23 vehicles were selected from a field of 195 teams, through a series of qualifying races.

The Grand Challenge, sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA), a division of the U.S. Department of Defense, aims to advance autonomous vehicle technology.

Stanley, Stanford Racing Team's entry in the DARPA Grand Challenge, finished first, earning the team a $2 million prize.

Only five vehicles made it through the race. With a finish time of 6:53, Stanley beat Carnegie Mellon's Red Team (7:04), Red Team Too (7:14), The Gray Insurance Company's Gray Team (7:30) and Team TerraMax (12:51).
