Developer Double Fine, best known for being led by Tim Schafer and for creating both Brutal Legend and Costume Quest, has announced that its next title will be called Stacking and will be based around Russian matryoshka dolls, allowing the gamer to use stacking mechanics to progress through the experience.

The publisher of Stacking will be THQ, the same company which worked with Double Fine on Costume Quest.

Lee Petty, who was the art director for Brutal Legend, leads the team which will work on Stacking, with Tim Schafer presumably overseeing the project as he did with Costume Quest.

The official website of the game says that the main character will be named Charlie Blackmore and that he is “the world's smallest Russian stacking doll”, allowing him to get inside complex stacks made up of Russian dolls and use the outermost of them and its unique ability.

As the game progresses the player will acquire more and more dolls and will need to arrange them in order to have the abilities he needs to solve the various puzzles he encounters.

The entire experience will be set during the 1930's and will feature all the trappings of a traditional adventure game and with the unique brand of humor Double Fine can bring to the table.

The developers are also saying that they plan to make each challenge solvable in many different ways, introducing a degree of replayability to Stacking.

Stacking is set to be launched during the spring of 2011 on the Xbox Live Arcade service from Microsoft and on the PlayStation Network from Sony.

The game will be available through download only and at the moment no PC launch is planned.

It seems that Double Fine is specializing in creating download only titles that mix weird initial setups with puzzle solving with a lot of humor sprinkled on top.
