Square Enix, the developer of the famed Final Fantasy role-playing game franchise, apparently has some surprises in store for us later this year.

The company's president, Yosuke Matsuda, has mentioned that Square Enix has a surprise console game coming for fiscal year 2015. The executive has also stated that the Japanese video game making and publishing company has a considerable amount of high-end games slated for FY2015, both inside and outside the country.

Final Fantasy XV, the long-awaited next installment in the Fabula Nova Crystallis subseries, is slated for release at the beginning of 2016, and according to Matsuda, it's only the start of the company's plans for the coming years, when it comes to Japanese role-playing games.

While he has not provided any additional information, he has made it pretty clear that there is a brand new surprise JRPG headed to home consoles.

Square Enix's resolution for fiscal year 2015 is "a box of surprises," as Siliconera quotes the executive, referring to the amount of high-quality and interesting titles currently in the works.

Matsuda has emphasized that both the Japanese and Western studios are hard at work, "bolstering their lineups considerably," which can only mean good news for us.

Square Enix has a pretty solid lineup for FY2015

Final Fantasy XV is expected to land on the PlayStation 4 home entertainment system from Sony and the Xbox One home console from Microsoft sometime next year.

For the time being, Square Enix is riding the success of Dragon Quest Heroes, which will also be released on western markets later this year, and is looking forward to launching Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, the remake of the popular PSP role-playing game.

The company's western studios are working on Rise of the Tomb Raider and Just Cause 3, among others, which Square Enix said we would be seeing more of at this year's edition of the E3 gaming convention.

Nosgoth, a competitive multiplayer video game based on the Legacy of Kain IP, is currently undergoing an open-beta test, and the company also has some plans for Japan, intending to release Lord of Vermillion Arena and Gunslinger Stratos Reloaded on PC.
