Going back into black this year

Square Enix has announced that, for the financial quarter that went from April to June, it has seen revenue go down by about 1.2% over last year, reaching the equivalent of 303 million dollars, while the company has registered a loss of 17.22 million dollars, which is pretty bad compared with the 29.68 million profit it obtained during the same period of last year.

Still, the publisher is not troubled about the figures as they are not in any way indicative of the sales power of the games put out but are a direct result of the acquisition of Eidos, which was completed for about 117 million dollars.

When it comes to videogames, the biggest seller for the quarter has been Kingdom Hearts 385/2 Days for the Nintendo DS, having shipped around half a million units in Japan and being slated to arrive in North America in September. Another strong performer has been Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, with up to 840,000 units sold in Japan, 770,000 units moved in North America and 550,000 units in Europe.

Results for this quarter will probably be significantly better, as the company cashes in on the success of Dragon Quest IX, released in Japan only and reported to have sold about 3.5 million units at the moment. Currently, the game has no release dates for Europe and North America, but localization is likely going on.

Square Enix is also working on another great franchise. Final Fantasy XIII, the biggest Japanese role playing game of the year, should arrive on the PlayStation 3 in Japan during the winter. Initially set to be an exclusive for the Sony home console but announced at E3 as also coming to the Xbox 360, it is set for a world wide release in 2010. The company is developing Final Fantasy XIV, seen as an MMO.
