If you think that the most dangerous thing for your computer is a virus, think again? The spyware seems to be the biggest problem for IT security in this year.

Many IT security companies have developed a standard procedure in which the scanning for viruses is only the next step, which comes after identifying the spywares on a PC. Everybody, form analysts to security administrators, agreed that impact of the spyware on the functionality of business is rising, but what they are defining as a spyware is still hard to comprehend. This general term may include very wide range of unethical software from difficult-to-uninstall toolbars to home-page hijackers and pop-up window generators. Bargain Buddy, GAIN, b3d projector, Gator, n-Case, SaveNow, Search Toolbar, Webhancer, (and) Search Assistant are only the most common names for the spyware problem, but also a worm or a trojan may be classified as spyware.

Another big problem is that users are aware of term spyware, but they don't know exactly how it works or what are the effects. The experts has estimated that every week means, in terms of security, another 8 to 10 new forms of spyware, that are harder and harder to detect.

One sign that the problem of spyware is no longer a business of security departments is that Microsoft is working on his operating systems to include solutions for this new plague. In early January, Microsoft unveiled Windows AntiSpyware for Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003, a rebranded collection of utilities from Giant Software. The package promises also real-time protection, not only removal of the spyware. The most common source for getting a spyware is browsing Internet. Even if you are on the safe side of the Web, just typing wrong an address may conduct you to an unknown domain, form which you may get a spyware in terms of seconds.

That's way more and more users are migrating to more secure browsers as Firefox, keeping Internet Explorer only for certain tasks as updating Windows or connecting to some Microsoft sites. Using anti-spyware tools such as Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE and PepiMK Software's Spybot Search & Destroy is another solution. So if you don't want to deal with the problems inflicted by spyware do not forget to update these programs.
