One day after the Nexus S 4G was introduced via Sprint, the smartphone is already receiving a new software update.

Obviously, this is just a minor maintenance software update, as the Nexus S 4G is delivered with the latest Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system out-of-the-box.

The update will bring the Nexus S 4G software from version GRJ06D to GRJ22 and includes minor improvements of the phone's features.

The Nexus S 4G maintenance update GRJ22 change log is detailed below:

- Improved performance and device security; - International roaming with Google Voice; - Tags application when using between two Nexus S devices.

It appears that Sprint is pushing the update OTA (over-the-air) gradually to devices that are selected randomly.

This means that the software will be automatically downloaded to the Nexus S 4G device and a system update screen will prompt the user to 'install now' or 'install later,' as soon as the downloading process completes.

To install the update simply choose 'install now' and the phone will reboot and then begin the software update.

However, if 'install later' is selected, a reminder will be sent once or twice a day to install the update.

As this is only a minor software update, the download and install time shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

For those wondering why a recently launched device receives a software update so soon, it looks like the update wasn't ready before the Nexus S 4G was introduced, so the carrier preferred to go live with the phone instead of delaying it for such a minor update.

The Nexus S 4G is now available for purchase via Sprint for $199.99 with a new two-year contract.

However, it seems that Best Buy is offering a better deal, as the Nexus S 4G is available for only $150 with a new two-year agreement.
