Sprint Nextel unveiled their plans regarding the expansion and evolution of the EV-DO network, more referred to as Sprint Power Vision network, which covers over half of the U.S. population at the moment.

The operator intends to extend its high-speed wireless network to reach almost 190 million people nationwide and in Puerto Rico by this year's end, thus making it the largest mobility network of its kind.

At the same time Sprint will implement second-generation technology upgrades later this year known as EV-DO Revision A, to bring additional mobility benefits to users beginning in 1Q 2007. Sprint will demonstrate the EV-DO Revision A connection card technology at the CTIA Wireless Show in Las Vegas with industry partners Nortel, Novatel Wireless and Sierra Wireless. The new technology will lead to a significant increase in the upload speeds, which should reach average 300-400 Kbps versus the current 70 - 144 Kpbs. The average download speeds increase only from 400 -700 Kpbs to 450-800 Kpbs.

All in all, Sprint plans to reach about 220 million people in the U.S. with the advanced network by the end of 3Q 2007.
