Sprint has just announced that it will deploy its next-generation, push-to-talk service powered by broadband CDMA network, along with several CDMA handsets, in Q4 2011.

Dubbed Sprint Direct Connect, the upcoming service is expected to deliver higher bandwidth capacity and replace the current iDEN service.

The carrier plans to launch several CDMA-based handset to go with the newly announced Sprint Direct Connect service.

One of the devices announced is the Kyocera DuraCore, which will feature most of the capabilities available on current Sprint push-to-talk (PTT) phones plus next-generation, push-to-talk applications and functionality.

Sprint is thrilled to launch Sprint Direct Connect with a strong starting lineup of phones. These devices represent the new gold standard in push-to-talk technology,” said Fared Adib, Sprint vice president of product development.

It looks like Kyocera DuraCore is just a simple and affordable clamshell that relies entirely on push-to-talk (PTT).

The feature-phone was designed to meet military standard 810G specifications for dust, shock and vibration, and is encased in rubber, non-slip Dura-Grip material, which makes it more durable.

The DuraCore comes with bi-directional speakerphone, Bluetooth wireless technology, a 2.5mm mono headphone jack (supports PTT headsets), large-font menu option, built-in GPS and support for SMS and MMS messaging and third-party data applications.

According to Sprint, besides the launch of Direct Connect service and group calling options, the upcoming CDMA-enabled devices are expected to provide users with Land Mobile Radio (LMR) interoperability, simultaneous data and push to talk, and availability notification.

It is also worth mentioning that Sprint plans to introduce additional capabilities for the Direct Connect service, including international push-to-talk (PTT), in early 2012.

Sprint stated that the Kyocera DuraCore's exact release date and price tag will be announced in due time, along with the specs sheet of a third Motorola CDMA-enabled handset that will be launched in Q4.
