Only OTA for now

Just as promised last week, wireless carrier Sprint has kicked off the over the air deployment of the new Android 2.2 Froyo software solution for the HTC EVO 4G. Not all EVO 4G units out there are currently enjoying the software update, but Sprint is set to provide it to all of its customers within the following days.

The HTC EVO 4G is already one of the nicest Android-based mobile phones on the market, mainly due to the fact that it is the first such device to pack 4G connectivity options, as well as due to its large touchscreen display.

However, the Android 2.2 Froyo update should make it even more appealing that before, especially since it would provide it with native support Adobe's Flash Player 10.1, which can greatly enhance the Internet browsing experience users receive from their device.

According to HTC, the solution that started rolling-out to customers today would be the official Android 2.2 update, different from what some might have downloaded and installed last week. The company announced via Twitter that the previous solution was an unofficial Android 2.2 ROM, and that it is working on a way to deliver the official update to those users too. The unofficial ROM did not include all the features Froyo was supposed to bring to EVO 4G, nor was it a stable solution, it seems.

It would take a while before Sprint and HTC manage to deliver the Android 2.2 Froyo software update to all users, but chances are that the process would actually be completed in a couple of weeks, if not sooner. For the time being, the update is available for download only over the air, but it might not be too long before the file is made available for a manual download too, for users who are fond of this installation method. Keep an eye on this space to learn more on when that would happen.
