If you ever took issue with Hollywood’s rather annoying tendency to keep churning out sequel after sequel, now’s the time to prepare yourself for a major rant. “Spring Breakers,” the surprise film of 2012, is also getting a follow up.

Starring James Franco as a K-Fed wannabe and a handful of former Disney stars in their raunchiest roles yet, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Benson, the film won over critics and fans, despite initial negative buzz.

If you’ve seen it, you know that making a sequel to it is very difficult, if not altogether impossible. However, it’s happening, Screen Daily notes in a report on Wild Bunch’s slate for the Cannes Film Festival 2014.

“The Spring Breakers do battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them” in the sequel, the trade publication writes, while producer Vincent Maraval is quoted as saying that “It’s not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original.”

Apparently, “Spring Breakers 2” will include both old and new characters but, for the time being, this all we know about it. Screen Daily doesn’t list an estimated release date or a timeframe for the production or, for that matter, which of the original cast members in a position to reprise their role are open to the idea of a sequel.
