A Wii-like strategy

Sony has officially confirmed that its motion tracking controller will be called Move and that a bundle featuring the device, the PlayStation Eye and a videogame will cost less than 100 dollars on launch day. Of course, the motion tracking solution in itself is useless if Sony and other publishers cannot deliver gaming experiences that truly employ its capabilities.

In a very Nintendo-like move, one of the first titles Sony has announced for the motion tracking gadget is called Sports Champions, but it might well be called PlayStation 3 Sports, seeing how it consists of athletic mini games created specifically to show off the motion tracking abilities of the Move. At the moment, a table tennis game and an archery event have been shown alongside a mini game called Gladiator Duel, which uses the Move controller as a sword.

Another experience designed for the new controller is called Move Party, which appears to be more oriented towards groups of gamers looking for a quick and fun game. The Move controller was used to kill bugs with a tennis racket, color in various pictures or cut the hair of another character.

Sony was not all about the more casual experience and it also showed off how the newly announced SOCOM 4, the third person squad-based shooter created by Zipper Interactive, would use the Move motion tracking controller. The motion tracking system will be used to move the camera around while something called a “sub controller” is employed to move the characters through the environment. The company apparently plans to offer the game in both a version based on full motion control and in one, which uses just the standard DualShock 3.

The Japanese firm also showed off Move control for LittleBigPlanet but it was not clear whether the capabilities were introduced to the game via a software patch of whether a special edition of the game would be sold bundled with the motion tracking solution.
