Hard-drive enclosures have been typically used to enable a hard disk or solid state drive to interface with the computer through a USB or eSATA port. Spire, however, has gone beyond offering this simple functionality and has come up with the EZvault RFID, whose RFID lock endows the enclosure with security features. The device can house hard drives or SSDs using the 2.5-inch form factor and its compact size makes it easy to fit inside a pocket.

RFID is short for Radio Frequency Identification lock, a built-in function of the drive enclosure that can lock and protect the stored data. The RFID key is as small as a coin and can also be used as a key-ring. The drive enclosure is also plug-and play ready and supports hot swap for a quick and easy access. The direct operation is possible through the USB cable and no additional power adapters are necessary, as the enclosure needs no more power than is supplied through the USB port.

The EZvault RFID measures 145 x 81 x 18.5mm, will work with any desktop or notebook personal computer and features a design that enables a tool-free installation without screws. Also, the aluminum alloy that makes up the case confers upon the device vibration resistance and an optimum heat dissipation. In addition, the enclosure also boasts the One Touch Backup function, all this in a lightweight package of only 317g.

The 2.5-inch HDD/SSD enclosure EzVault RFID supports 2.5-inch SATA storage units and has a mean time before failure (MTBF) of three years. It will work with the Windows 7 and Windows Vista operating systems, as well as Windows XP, and will come bundled with the RFID key-ring, a USB data cable, a USB power cable, as well as the necessary driver disk and user manual. Backed by a one-year-limited warranty, the distribution of the device through Spire branch officers will begin around early March 2010, when it will carry a price tag of $22.99, the equivalent of 16.50 Euro.
