Sony Computer Entertainment of America has commented on the NPD Group figures released last week, saying that for more than one year the PlayStation 3 has seen growth in sales when year over years comparisons are used, with the launch of the Move motion tracking system and the introduction of full three dimensional capabilities set to offer the device another boost over the coming months.

The PS3 sold less than the Xbox 360 during August but one bright spot for Sony is that Madden NFL 11, the biggest game of the month, saw a big increase in the number of copies moved on the Sony platform over 2009.

One possible explanation is that PS2 gamers have seen the benefits of moving over to the new generation of consoles.

The Move peripheral arrives during September, about one month and a half before Microsoft launches its Kinect rival for the Xbox 360.

The 3D move was set to come in October but Sony has recently said that a delay will happen although three dimensional gaming and Blu-ray play will come to the PlayStation 3 this year.

Patrick Seybold, who is the director of corporate communication at Sony Computer Entertainment of America, has stated, “When PlayStation first emerged on the gaming scene 15 years ago, it garnered immediate attention for breaking the standard model of cartridge-based video gaming with a disc-based model and robust three-dimensional game play, helping to drive the transformation of a $2B dollar a year industry into a more than $20B industry, annually.”

He added, “Fast forward fifteen years and PlayStation continues to push the envelope of innovation with the industry’s biggest franchises and new technologies like PlayStation Move and 3D stereoscopic gaming. August marks our 13th consecutive month of year-over-year growth for the PS3, supporting our ongoing momentum and further preparing us to officially kick off the key selling season next week with PlayStation Move.”
