The dual-screen laptop

For a good time now, portable computer system makers have been trying to provide their customers with a system that can actually be considered a real desktop-replacement. Such PCs are seen as the bridge between portability, delivered by laptops, and performance, provided by desktops. The market for desktop replacement laptops has seen its share of capable systems, but most of them have been designed with similar specifications. However, a new portable workstation from Lenovo might take the concept of desktop replacement to a new level.

The ThinkPad W700ds has been making the headlines since late last week, when a ThinkPad user noticed it on one of Lenovo's webpages. However, we now have some more details and a bunch of new pictures that should provide you with a better glimpse of what the system maker plans to ship sometime in early January.

As you will see in the images below, the W700ds will actually provide you with a dual-display configuration, with the second LCD boasting a 10.6-inch resolution, while the primary screen has a large 17-inch resolution.

In terms of performance, the W700ds has been designed to boast a quad-core Intel Core 2 processor, combined with an NVIDIA Quadro mobile graphics processor, providing as many as 128 cores. Also, 8GB of DDR3 memory and a pair of hard drive or solid-state drive bays can take the storage capacity of the ThinkPad to a whopping 960GB.

In addition, the W700ds also boasts a built-in WACOM digitizer. On a side note, the one thing that's probably missing from this 11 pound system is a multi-functional printer.

The ThinkPad W700ds is slated to become available sometime in January for a starting price tag of $3600, which is rather explainable, given all the features it provides.
