The death toll in the Santiago de Compostela train derailment and crash on Wednesday has risen to 78, reports say.

According to the Irish Times, officials in the Galicia region have declared a seven-day mourning period.

The passengers could have been pilgrims coming to Santiago for an annual pilgrimage celebration, El Camino de Santiago.

As I mentioned earlier, the festivities have been canceled in light of recent events. They included the High Mass at the Santiago cathedral.

Authorities are still working on clearing the scene of the crash, almost a day after the incident. Cranes have been brought in to move the wreckage.

The horrific moment when the train is smashed to pieces has been featured in the clip posted above.

Passengers have been extracted through car windows. So far, no charges have been made and the case is being handled as an accident.
