We hope to see more apps like Space Sketchr soon

It’s been a while since Google first talked about Project Tango, which hopefully will bring 3D sensing capabilities to tablets and smartphones.

Since then, we've heard that LG is going to be the first manufacturer to launch a Tango 3D Tablet sometime in early 2015. We have yet to see it arrive.

Even while we’re waiting for the consumer friendly version of the device, Google already has rolled out a developer kit Project Tango tablet preview. And we’re already starting to view the fruits of devs’ labor, so maybe we can get a clearer idea of what 3D sensing actually implies.

Project Tango employs a front-facing camera with 120 degree viewing angle, a 4MP, 2 μm pixel camera on the back plus an additional motion-tracking camera and an embedded depth sensor.

There are plenty of potential uses for a technology like that including Gaming, Shopping, Advertising and much more.

But the real creative potential of 3D sensing remains to be tapped. That’s where artists come into play. California-based studio, Left Field Labs has developed a demo app they are calling Space Sketchr.

In raw terms, Space Sketchr is actually a drawing app. You can pick your colors, brushes, patterns. The interesting part comes now, you’ll be doing all this while you “travel” through space.

Since Tango is capable of tracking the moving pattern of the tablet through 3D space via its embedded motion-tracking camera, it can “sense” when and where you are drawing a line in accordance with the tablet. Furthermore, it will record these movements and translate them into 3D drawings.

Left Field Labs has posted a video demoing the capabilities of the application and showing a user who draws a spiral circle that eventually spans through the room endlessly.

Once the drawing has been recorded, other people can bring their input to the drawing using a Tango device. You can even walk around it and view it from different angles.

The Space Sketchr application is currently available for download in the Google Play store, but naturally you’ll be able to install it only if you’re rocking a Project Tango device. Are you one of the lucky few?
