Thomas Hentschel Lund, the leader of the development team at Full Control, says that the upcoming Space Hulk video game is designed to use core mechanics borrowed from both the original board game release from Games Workshop and from the likes of XCOM.

Speaking to Rock, Paper, Shotgun, the developer says that the original Space Hulk is a well-balanced experience that requires little change in order to appeal to gamers.

Thomas Hentschel Lund states, “Our vision is that we essentially want to keep the claustrophobic atmosphere, you’re up against millions of Genestealers potentially, you’re the underdog. You’re going to lose this game three out of four times, just as in the boardgame.”

He adds, “For me, that’s one of these essential things that I like about the boardgame. It’s challenging. You’re playing against a huge amount of enemies, and you will most likely lose and have that last stand kind of feeling.”

Space Hulk is a game that allows players to control a team of Space Marine Terminators who are exploring one of the huge derelict ships of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, fighting off Tyranid Genestealers in narrow corridors.

Full Control will introduce a number of gameplay enhancements designed to make the experience more fluid on the PC, including improvements to movement and to the way information is delivered to the player.

Developers also want to make the experience more cinematic, in the way that Firaxis updated the classic XCOM gameplay for modern players in XCOM: Enemy Unknown, one of the best releases of 2012.

Space Hulk is also set to include asynchronous multiplayer, and Full Control says that it has changed some of the rules of the board game from Games Workshop in order to accommodate the new mode.

Space Hulk will be launched on the PC and on iOS devices at a later point during 2013.
