The fake Anonymous-OS Live CD based on Ubuntu gets rejected from SourceForge

We've informed you yesterday, March 15th, about a fake operating system based on the Ubuntu OS and the MATE desktop environment, called Anonymous-OS.

Based on Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot), the Anonymous-OS Live CD was designed to be a Linux distribution packed with "hacking" tools for "testing the security of web sites".

It's creators were pretending to be part of the famous Anonymous cult. Wrong! The legit members of Anonymous warned people, via their Twitter channel, that the Anonymous-OS is fake and it is wrapped in trojans.

"Because stupid ***** can't read. Anonymous OS can't be trusted please think before you use it. We're NOT vouching for it." - said Anonymous on Twitter.

Therefore, we're reporting today, March 16th, that the popular SourceForge hosting site took action and closed the project page of the Anonymous-OS Live CD, removing the downloads from their servers.

"We looked at the project, and decided that although the name of the project was misleading (we see no evidence that it is connected with Anonymous) it appeared, on initial glance, to be a security-related operating system, with, perhaps, an attack-oriented emphasis."

"However, as the day progressed, various security experts have had a chance to take a look at what’s really in this distribution, and verify that it is indeed a security risk, and not merely a distribution of security-related utilities, as the project page implies." - said SourceForge in a response to the Anonymous-OS project.

The Anonymous-OS Live CD
This should be a lesson to all who attempt to make such "Live CDs," pretending that they want to help security experts by providing "neat" tools.

Of course, we can't guarantee that the creators of this Anonymous-OS won't find another hosting service to upload their malicious Live CD.

"We have therefore decided to take this download offline and suspend this project until we have more information that might lead us to think differently. We’ll be in touch with the project admin, and let you know if and when we find out anything to contrary, but for now, that’s what we’re doing." - stated SourceForge in the announcement.

Good job, SourceForge!
