Sound Studio 3 is a Mac OS X app focused on recording and editing digital audio on your computer. The software can digitize tapes and even vinyl records, record live performances, and more, and has now been updated to include the latest tweaks and bug fixes.

Using the third installment of Sound Studio, you can also create your own mixes with crossfades, tweak the levels and EQ, apply digital effects and more. Everything is saved in all major file formats. With Sound Studio 3, you can also record professional sounding Podcasts and other audio dialog. According to the makers, Sound Studio has been the Mac’s most popular audio program for many years. Therefore, the company continues to add new features regularly, also taking advantage of the very latest findings in technology.

For those who are looking to play around with recording more than the average user, but don’t want to dish out a lot of cash, Freeverse advises using the iMic from the folks at Griffin Technology. The iMic makes the sound you record into your Mac much clearer because it sends the audio over USB, according to Freeverse, in contrast with the standard 1/8 inch jacks on all computers, which are "notoriously noisy" and pick up interference from inside the machine.

Using Sound Studio 3, Mac users can: take advantage of their Mac’s built-in audio capabilities; record and edit digital audio in 32-bit floating point accuracy, at any sample rate (hardware permitting); layer sounds with multiple tracks; apply one of 24 built-in effects filters; use any Core Audio plug-in Audio Unit effect; open and save in the most popular audio formats (MP3, AAC, AIFF, WAV, and others); edit iTunes song metadata and ID3 tags; batch process files using Automator or AppleScript.

As noted above, Sound Studio 3.5.7 includes the latest updates and corrections. Freeverse assures users it has fixed the automator and applescript issues, but has also updated Monbot – Bookend Audio, to correct an Apple Script error in OS X 10.5.

"We at Freeverse have always found Sound Studio to be the perfect app for recording voiceovers, tweaking audio or creating sound effects, (monkey noises included of course)," says the company. "We’ve used it for years to create all the dialog and sound effects in our games, which is why we’re so thrilled to be publishing this amazing new edition."

Sound Studio 3 connects to any standard USB audio device or other Core Audio device. The software calls for Mac OS X 10.4 or later, and is a Universal Binary. You can update your version here.
