The company will probably have to pay $490 million / €362 million for the deal

Over the past few days, a rumor has been circulating about Sony presumably wanting to sell its PC business to Lenovo. The rumor has not been proven half-correct.

Sony is thinking of offloading its PC business, but not to Lenovo.

Instead, according to Nikkei, Sony will drop its personal computer division into the waiting arms of investment fund Japan Industrial Partners (JIP).

It's a nasty deal, because Sony will have to finance the spin-off, and while JIP will sell it to a company spun off from the investment firm, Sony will only get a small stake.

Thus, it's possible that Sony will declare a net loss for the first time in two years.

At least the employees won't get fired. They will be transferred to the new company, and those that won't will be moved to other posts within Sony itself.
