Sony is getting ready to jump onboard with Google with a new smartwatch

Sony has been in the business of making smartwatches for some time now. Its latest, the SmartWatch 2 (also known as the SW2) was launched in late September 2013 with a 1.61-inch LCD and 220 x 176 resolution.

The wearable ran Sony’s own proprietary OS on board, and this is probably an aspect which didn't agree with a lot of folks out there – reason enough for the company to make a change.

Anyway, the media’s attention has recently been focused on the launches of products such as the LG G Watch R and Samsung Gear S. On top of that, IFA 2014 is scheduled to start this week and we expect Motorola to finally unveil its beautiful, curvaceous Moto 360 there.

And ASUS should also roll out its hero product, the first one pertaining to the category. But a new report coming from 9to5Google claims that unexpectedly Sony is gearing up to make a debut with an Android Wear smartwatch – a first for the company.

This comes against what Sony claimed earlier this year, when the company’s US mobile chief said that the device maker would be sticking to making their own OS for smartwatches, as opposed to jumping onboard with Android Wear.

But according to the new report, this is not the case anymore, as Sony now believes it needs a product to compete with the likes of Samsung, LG and Motorola.

The device will be taking the name of Sony Smartwatch 3 and will be unveiled at the IFA tradeshow in Berlin this week. We’ll keep an eye out in order to tell you more about it in the upcoming days.

The intelligent timepiece will have a 1.68-inch display with 320x320 pixel resolution and will follow the trend of what is currently available on the market, bringing in dust and water resistance capabilities.

Furthermore, Sony will be taking the opportunity to unveil a smart bracelet going by the name of the SmartBand Talk. The wearable will take advantage of a curved E Ink display, Bluetooth and voice calling capabilities.

And as you might be well aware by now, the company is also planning to make a splash in the world of tablets, with its new Xperia Z3 Compact slate. The device maker will also show off the Sony Xperia X3 and Z3 Compact flagship smartphones at the event in Berlin.

It’s going to be a busy end of the week for Sony, but we expect to see good things. We’ll keep you posted as the events unfold.
