Sony has just announced that it will soon expand its Cyber-shot point-and-shoot camera range with a new ultra-slim model that is known as the DSC-TX55 and that features a number of innovative technologies like “By Pixel Super Resolution.”

This technology was developed in-house by Sony and is said to expand twofold the camera 5x optical zoom, by using a specialized image processing algorithm while still capturing 16.2-megapixel images at full quality.

It goes without saying that we are more than a bit skeptical about this claim, but even if this fails the TX55 still has more than a few features that can make up for it, like the advertised 0.1 seconds auto-focus speed or the 1080i 60fps Full HD video recording.

In addition, the camera also packs, a backlit image sensor, optical image stabilization, a 3.3-inch OLED touch-screen, as well as 3D Sweep Panorama and Picture Effects modes.

The two latter features were carried over from the higher-end NEX-C3 and they enable the camera to capture 42.9 megapixel panoramas as well as to apply all sorts of effects to the captured images, like HDR painting, rich-tone monochrome, miniature, partial color, or pop color.

The pictures and movies captured can be stored either on a Memory Stick or an microSD card, as the TX55 is compatible with both of these standards.

"Our new DSC-TX55 model redefines what a compact camera can do," said Yosuke Tomoda, director of Sony Electronics' Cyber-shot business.

"In addition to the newly developed, ultra-thin chassis design, the camera features an incredible combination of features and performance, putting more creativity at users' fingertips than ever before," concluded the company's rep.

The new Sony Cyber-shot TX55 camera will be available for about $350 this September at Sony stores and other authorized retailers.
