Today, mobile phone maker Sony has made a new device in the popular Xperia series official, namely the Xperia sola. The handset introduces a series of new technologies to the market, such as floating touch navigation.

The smartphone also packs entertainment features from Sony, along with support for Xperia SmartTags, courtesy of its NFC capabilities. Through this feature, users will be able to change the settings of their devices to better fit their own lifestyle.

The new Sony Xperia sola is expected to become available for purchase starting with the second quarter of the year, and will sport three color flavors, namely black, white and red.

The new floating touch capability packed inside Xperia sola provides users with the option to navigate on the web using the device without actually touching the screen, but by simply hovering the finger above it.

“Once the desired link is found it can be highlighted and a simple tap will load the page. Floating touch will evolve with new user functionality and applications through software updates and engagement with developers,” Sony notes.

The new mobile phone features a 3.7” Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine and is powered by a 1GHz dual-core STE U8500 application processor.

The smartphone also packs a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with 2D and 3D Sweep Panorama capabilities, auto focus, and HD video recording (720).

Sony also packed Xperia sola with support for Sony Entertainment Network services (pre-installed Video and Music Unlimited apps), as well as with xLOUD and 3D surround sound audio technology.

“Xperia sola comes with the power of Sony and a sense of magic with floating touch, giving consumers a fun new way to browse the web and latest technology to show off,” Calum MacDougall, head of Xperia marketing for Sony Mobile Communications, commented.

“With Xperia SmartTags out of the box and access to the latest content through Sony Entertainment Network, Xperia sola is perfect for consumers looking for ease of use and the best in entertainment in a smart and innovative smartphone.”

The new smartphone runs under Google’s Android 2.3 OS, but will taste Android 4.0 this summer. Sony also announced that the device would be marketed in Italy as Xperia sole and that it would arrive in China as Xperia MT27i. No info on the phone's pricing has emerged so far.
