Today, Japanese mobile phone maker Sony Mobile has officially announced the upcoming availability of the Sony Xperia ZL2 smartphone in its homeland market.

The handset arrives on shelves as the successor of last year’s Xperia ZL but sports most of the hardware specifications that Xperia Z2 arrived on the market with, though in a smaller body.

The new Sony Xperia ZL2 has been announced with a 5-inch touchscreen display capable of delivering a full HD resolution, which also sports the Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 and X-Reality engine. The smaller screen is accompanied by a smaller bezel compared to the predecessor.

The same as the Xperia Z2 before it, the new phone packs water-resistance capabilities, as Sony details on its website.

The new Sony Xperia ZL2 arrives on shelves with a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 MSM8974AB chipset inside, as well as with 3GB of RAM next to it.

Moreover, the new device sports 32GB of internal memory, which can be expanded by up to 128GB of storage, courtesy of a microSD memory card slot.

As GSMArena notes, the new mobile phone has been made official with the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system loaded on top, complemented by Sony’s own user interface.

The smartphone comes with the same 20.7-megapixel back camera as the Xperia Z2, and it is also capable of recording videos in 4K (3,840 x 2,160 pixels) resolution. A 2MP camera for video calling has also been included in the device.

Connectivity-wise, the new device packs all the usual suspects, including Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. A built-in GPS receiver for navigation purposes has also been added, along with the usual set of sensors.

The new Sony Xperia ZL2 measures 137 x 72 x 10.8mm and weighs 167 grams, which makes it a bit larger and a tad heavier when compared to its predecessor. Moreover, the handset is powered by a 3000mAh Li-Ion battery.

Sony has discussed plans to release the new smartphone in Japan in Black, White, and Turquoise color options, though no specific info on its pricing has been provided as of now.

Unfortunately, Sony hasn’t unveiled any intention to make the new mobile phone available for purchase around the world and has announced it only for Japan for the time being.

However, considering the fact that both the Xperia XL and the Xperia Z2 are already available in more countries out there, it might not be too long before the new Xperia ZL2 is brought to the international market too. Stay tuned for more on the matter.
