It’s raining Lollipops today. Earlier we told you that Motorola finally started rolling out the Android 5.0.2 update for its first-gen Moto X as part of a soak test. Now, we have more good news for you.

As you probably already know, Sony users have been deprived of their fair share of Lollipop, as the company kept postponing the update. At some point, we even told you that Sony might not be looking to update non-Xperia Z handsets to Google’s latest build, but as it later became apparent, this won’t actually be the case.

Sony finally starts the Lollipop rollout

Anyway, the good news is that today Sony has finally announced that the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact smartphones are getting the much awaited update.

The Xperia Z3 is currently getting the new build in certain regions including Northern Europe, but other territories should be seeing it soon enough too.

The build in question is 23.1A.0.690 and will be updating your phone to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop and the kernel to version 3.4.0.

Sony highlights certain special features the new build brings to the table, after blending Material Design with their own proprietary software.

Some changes you can expect to see

For starters, you’re promised a fresh, streamlined look based on Google’s vision of Material Design but retaining Sony’s so called minimalistic interface.

The new build brings multi-user profiles and guest mode capabilities, plus Android for Work, which gears up your handset for business activities.

Last but not least, performing the update will add better storage control and customization. Users updating their Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact to Lollipop will notice an option to easily move applications from internal memory to the SD card.

Like it’s the case with any update, the new software might reach some devices sooner than others, but don’t fret if you don’t see a notification on your phone yet. The essential part is that Sony has finally kick-started the rollout.

Sony might have taken its sweet time with the new build for a good reason. Companies like Samsung have rolled out Lollipop sooner, but in some countries like Norway, the company was forced to halt the updating process for the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S5 models due to multiple bugs.
