We reported a few days ago that Sony might launch the Xperia Z2 in Australia on May 1, though the information was not confirmed. Fortunately, beginning today, Sony fans can pick the Xperia Z2 up via major carrier Optus.

The Xperia Z2 is available from Optus on the following plans: $16 (€10) handset repayment on the Optus $60 (€40) plan, as well as $10 (€6.7) handset repayment on the Vodafone $65 (€43.5) plan.

According to AusDroid, customers who purchase the Xperia Z2 through Optus until July 31 will also receive a pair of Adidas training shoes worth $190 (€125), in celebration of the upcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Aside from that, all those who purchase the Xperia Z2, regardless of where they bought it, will receive a digital copy of Xscape, Michael Jackson’s last album of new tracks.

Optus will not be the sole carrier that will offer the Sony Xperia Z2 in Australia, as the Japanese company has confirmed that Telstra and Vodafone will also sell the smartphone as well.

While we don’t have any info on Xperia Z2’s release at Telstra, Vodafone has confirmed that the first stock of units will arrive in stores on May 7.

Until then, customers who do not wish to commit to a long-term contract can grab the Xperia Z2 directly through Sony’s online store, where it can be bought for $760 (€510) off contract. The smartphone is available in both black and white, but the purple color version seems to be missing from Sony’s stock.

The phone will ship with Android 4.4.2 KitKat operating system right out of the box. Sony’s flagship smartphone is powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 801 chipset, which accommodates a quad-core 2.3GHz processor and an Adreno 330 graphics processing unit.

It also comes with an impressive 20.7-megapixel rear-facing camera which features autofocus, LED flash, image stabilization HDR and 4K video recording. Sony Xperia Z2 is IP58 certified, which makes it dust proof and water resistant over 1 meter for up to 30 minutes.

“Sony Mobile has taken the premium Z series to the next level with the Xperia Z2. Xperia Z2 offers an innovative experience that captures memories in stunning detail through 4K video shooting and offers new ways to use the camera with our unique Xperia camera apps.

Our unparalleled sound technologies allow customers to listen to their music even in noisy environments without interruptions thanks to our acclaimed digital noise cancelling technology,” said Sony Mobile’s John Featherstone.
