Sony Xperia S was officially unveiled about five months ago at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, along with Xperia ion.

Although the smartphone was confirmed to be launched with Android 2.3 Gingerbread out of the box, Sony Mobile stated that the Xperia S would receive an Ice Cream Sandwich update at the end of Q2 2012.

The same could apply for Xperia P and Xperia U, though we don’t have any information regarding the exact release dates for these updates.

Customers who already purchased the Xperia S might be in for a nice surprise as Sony almost confirmed the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will arrive on their devices starting late May.

It looks like a Sony Mobile official stated on the company’s support forum that the update was slated for a late May / early June release, though not all Xperia S units would receive it at the same time.

The long-awaited update will be deployed gradually, meaning that some Xperia S owners might get it at the end of May, while others will receive the Android 4.0 ICS upgrade by mid-June.

Check out below Sony Mobile’s statement regarding the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for Xperia S:

Xperia S is planned to get ICS somewhere around late May / early June. That's what's been said and that's still what we're sticking to. Any other dates (such as June/July) are just speculation. The roll out is, as always, gradual and will not happen overnight for all phones. Some phones might get the update in late May whilst other will get it in mid-June etc.”

In the same piece of news, it appears that Sony India has confirmed Android 4.0 ICS for Xperia S will be available as early as late May. Stay tuned for more info on the subject.
