Sony unveiled today the “world's lightest computer with Blu-ray Disc technology” part of the company's Vaio notebooks. Details on its new Vaio TT series surfaced the Internet prior to the official announcement, as we informed you a few hours ago, and it appears that the leaked information was pretty much accurate.

“This engineering marvel packs the power of HD technology into an ultra-light, ultra-portable notebook,” said Mike Abary, senior vice president of VAIO product marketing at Sony Electronics.

Packed in a lightweight carbon-fiber chassis, the company's new model can pride itself with a weight of just 2.87 pounds and a 1-inch thickness. It comes with a 11.1-inch LED backlit widescreen display that features Sony's XBRITE-DuraView LCD technology and delivers 100 percent color saturation for a wide range of vibrant colors and true-to-life picture quality.

Some of the most significant features on the series of Vaio notebooks include the support for Blu-ray Disc, HDMI output connector, and dual-channel 256GB solid state drives. In addition, the company's new lightweight ultra-portable computer system delivers the computing power provided by an Intel Core 2 processor, which will also improve the notebook's battery life.

Aside from the above mentioned specifications and the ones we presented to you earlier today, the company also announced the pricing details for its new TT series. Users will be able to purchase a TT model for a starting price tag of $2000, while the BD-equipped model will go for about $2700. Featuring a 128GB SSD, the Vaio TT series notebooks start at a price of $2750. Color options include premium carbon black, silk black, champagne gold and crimson red.

In addition to the new Vaio TT Series, Sony also announced today its third generation of internal Blu-ray Disc writer. The new model, which will go for about $400, has been designed to provide almost every user out there with an affordable Blu-ray solution.

“Consumers are demanding a better experience,” said Bob DeMoulin, marketing manager for branded storage products in Sony Electronics’ IT Products Division. “Not only are we providing state of the art hardware, but also the industry’s most complete software bundle and premium content.”

The company's new BWU-330S model can burn single and dual-layer BD-R media at up to 8X speed, thus enabling a full 25GB disc to be recorded in about 15 minutes, while a full 50GB disc requires about 30 minutes. The drive can also record DVDs at up to 16X speed and CDs at up to 48X. It can be connected through a Serial ATA (SATA) interface and comes in a standard 5.25-inch form factor. It will be available through select retailers, resellers and at sonystyle.com starting next month.

The new Vaio TT series and Blu-ray Disc Writer are currently available for pre-orders.
