After a series of teasers that have been delivered over the previous week, the teams at publisher Sony and developer Supermassive Games announce that they are working on a redesigned version of Until Dawn that will be launched on the PlayStation 4 and aims to deliver a new take on the horror genre.

The title will allow gamers to become one of a group of eight friends who go to a remote mountain getaway and need to get through a night of terror delivered by a series of mysterious entities.

The official announcement states, "We wrote the story in collaboration with horror auteurs Larry Fessenden and Graham Reznick (Stake Land, Habit, The Last Winter) who’ve been bringing great independent horror movies to the big and small screen for decades. That story challenges you to unravel the terrifying mysteries of Blackwood Pines."

The team has not offered any sort of details on the location or on the forces that are threatening the group, whether they are entirely supernatural in nature of if there are simple and clear explanations that gamers will be able to find as they play,

The various characters are created using top Hollywood talent, including Hayden Panettiere, known from Heroes and Nashville, Rami Malek, seen in Night at the Museum, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, and Need for Speed, and Brett Dalton from Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Supermassive Games says that the entire Until Dawn experience has been redesigned, rebuilt, and rewritten in order to take advantage of the new opportunities that are opened up by the PlayStation 4 from Sony.

The studio adds, "One of the first changes you’ll notice, apart from how much more beautiful it now looks and sounds, is that we’ve moved from first person to third person perspective. This allows a much more cinematic experience for you, so you feel completely immersed in this beautiful but spine-chilling world."

The company is using an improved version of the Killzone Shadow Fall engine, which is designed to provide improved graphics quality, better facial animations, and more techniques that will deliver interesting performances from the virtual characters.

At the moment, neither Supermassive Games nor Sony is ready to offer a launch window for Until Dawn.

It's also unclear whether the game will deliver a changed story for all the eight included characters or if there are also small differences in perspective between them.
