Christmas is coming and, with it, perhaps the need to watch some old family videos or just enjoy a movie with family and/or friends, but those seeking a projector will have to look at other things than the new Sony flagship projector, and it isn't just because of its immense price.

VPL-VW1000ES is the fairly unapproachable name that Sony chose for its newest home-theater projector.

It is described as the world's first such item to feature 4K resolution and will only debut in March, 2012 9in Singapore anyway).

For those unfamiliar with the term, 4K resolution is the shortened form of 4,096 x 2,160 pixels.

Of course, those who know of these things will also point out that there isn't really much media available in that format.

Sony took this into account and implemented its exclusive Super Resolution 4K upscaler “Reality Creation” technology.

Through it, standard definition and high-definition video, whether in 2D or 3D, can be upscaled to 4K picture signals.

Little loss in details will be recognizable when converting 1,080p Blu-ray video into 4K.

Speaking of 3D, full 4K 3D is enabled by a built-in IR transmitter that links to the active shutter glasses that are part of the product bundle (said glasses can be recharged via USB).

“Sony has delivered professional 4K digital projector globally to cinemas. Our overall shipping quantity for 4K digital cinema projectors have reached 10,000 units,” said Tsuyoshi Nagata, general manager of Presentation Display, Professional Solutions Company (PSAP), Sony Electronics Asia Pacific.

“We are the only company to offer a full range of 4K products and end-to-end solutions for 4K."

Spec-wise, the device has a 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and a 2,000 ANSI-lumens brightness, plus the ability to project images with up to 200 inches in diagonal.

Its price is an impoverishing 31,999 Singapore dollars, which is about as much as $24,776 and 18,191 Euro.
