Professional film makers might just have a reason to gush

Sony is building on its reputation as purveyor of all sorts of hardware products by bringing forth, according to reports anyway, a new memory card that is both very capacious and very fast.

If anything can be said about memory cards, it is that they are very varied, not just in terms of capacity and pricing, but performance and design as well.

With so many mobile and photo/video devices relying on them to suit their storage needs, there are many formats.

Sony is one of the companies that has a stake in this IT segment, and its latest invention has been discovered.

The product bears the name of SxS PRO and has a capacity which, though considerable, is not the only major asset.

Granted, to have 64 GB of storage space in something just a little bigger than a postage stamp is nothing to scoff at.

Still, Sony threw in a bunch of other assets, like a read and write speed of 1.2 Gbps, which, among other things, allows the full content to be copied to a PC in just about eight minutes.

Of course, the real worth of the speed comes into play while professional filmmakers are using this item to record high bit-rate videos.

For those that want specifics, about 120 minutes of video footage in HD422 50 Mbps in MXF mode can be recorded.

In addition to the above, Sony implemented a so-called “Intelligent Technology by SxS,” which confers high durability, data reliability and useful functions with XDCAM/XDCAM EX.

The reason behind these benefits is the set of error correction, wear leveling, read reclaim and power failure management features, among other things.

Unfortunately, even though it was explicitly said that the Asia Pacific region would get the 64 GB Sony SxS PRO starting next month (October 2011), no price was actually mentioned.
