As for other Xperia smartphones, the roll-out will take place in stages

Owners of Xperia active devices from Sony can now download and install the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system flavor on their handsets.

The OS upgrade, which started to roll out to other smartphones in last year’s Xperia lineup, is now being delivered to Xperia active as well, in stages.

The staged roll-out implies that not all users will get a taste of it right from the start, and that they would have to wait for Sony to make it available for them as well before being able to upgrade their devices.

In a recent post on its Sony Mobile forums, the company notes that users should check the Sales Item (SI) identification number on their devices to see whether the new software was delivered to them or not.

“The SI is identified by an 8-digit number in the format XXXX-XXXX. To find out what SI number your phone has, please take off the back-cover and take out the battery. Under the battery you will find your SI number,” the mobile phone maker notes.

At the moment, only Xperia active devices featuring SI numbers 1253-2209 to 1262-1309 can download and install the software update on their devices.

Users can now head over to the aforementioned post on the company’s website to have a look at the table of SI numbers currently receiving the update, to see whether their devices are listed there or not.

“If you find your SI in the released software table the software for your device is released and available in PC Companion and Bridge for Mac where you can update your Xperia Smartphone,” the company notes.

With the delivery of Ice Cream Sandwich to Xperia active, Sony has completed the upgrade of all 2011 Xperia devices to Android 4.0.

However, there still are owners of newer Xperia devices (2012 smartphones) waiting for the upgrade, such as Xperia P and Xperia U users, who should receive it sometime in the third quarter of the year.
