Sony will start to sell 2 types of Blu-Ray recorders this December, according to Nikkei. A 500 GB recorder will cost a stunning $2500, while the 250 GB model will be available for $2100. Yesterday, it presented the BWU-100a Blue-Ray burner Cyberlink Power DVD, an upgrade program that allows it to play commercial movies.

This happened after Panasonic announced it will release Blu-Ray players in November, and after Samsung launched a Blu-Ray unit in UK, the BD-P1000, with a cost of ?1000. Also, more than a month has passed since Plextor released its Blu-Ray drive, the PX-B900A, which can support write-once, re-writable and dual-layer media in 25 GB and 50 GB capacities.

Recently, Sony introduced AccuCORE patented technology - aimed at diminishing the deterioration of the discs determined by scratches, data/image corruption or the fluctuation that occurs when the disc is spinning.

"The arrival of 50GB Blu-Ray Disc media is an important milestone in the evolution of this new format," said Mike Lucas, director of marketing for Sony Electronics' Media and Application Solutions Division. "The capacity represents more than four hours of quality video, at a 24 Mbps transfer rate, allowing users to take full advantage of Sony's Blu-ray Disc burners and VAIO desktop and notebook computers."

In the meantime, Toshiba's HD-DVD standard gains ground, with its 1 TB hard drive in the lead, and almost the same price as the Blue-Ray units.
