Sony Russia claims that the new project that BioWare has been teasing since last week is nothing more than Mass Effect 3, the last game in the trilogy, despite the fact that other sources are claiming that the developer is working on a online based first person shooter based in the same universe.

A now deleted Twitter post on the official feed coming from the Russian division said, in a rough translation, “The company Bioware for premium VGA showed a teaser in which we can see the first shots of Mass Effect 3”, as translated by VG247.

The fact that the Twitter message was quickly removed could mean that its content was true and that At the Spike Video Game Awards gamers will see the first official information linked to Mass Effect 3 but it could also mean that Sony Russia realized the error of the information it had and shared.

Last week BioWare offered a teaser image, a teaser video and a date for its big announcement, with fans of the series speculating that they were seeing the first signs of a new Mass Effect title.

Then BioWare offered a number of images which were then translated into binary strings and then into the atomic weight of iron and into the lowest temperature ever registered on Earth.

A more recent clue pointed gamers to the website of the British Secret Intelligence Service.

It's not clear how all these clues tie into Mass Effect 3, which would probably be concerned with the final battles between humanity and its allies and the Reapers.

A source from inside the game development world was cited by Kotaku as saying that the new project was a spin off which moved into the online shooter territory, with a leveling up system similar to that seen in Call of Duty: Black Ops.

BioWare will probably continue to put out teasers between now and December 11.
