Sony revealed a brand new celebratory PlayStation 4 unit up for grabs, to commemorate 20 years since the PlayStation brand first entered this world.

The new home console is colored in classic grey and will only be available in a limited run of 12,300 units, as the sticker on the console points out.

The news comes from Adam Boyes, the vice president of Publisher and Developer Relations at PlayStation, who tweeted an image of the console alongside the announcement that it would become available for sale at the PlayStation Experience event, to be held this weekend, December 6 and 7, in Las Vegas.

The event will take place right after The Game Awards 2014 concludes, showing a bunch of new gameplay footage from the most highly anticipated video games of the moment, as well as playing host to a couple of new game announcements. The Game Awards is scheduled to take place this Friday, on December 5, in Las Vegas.

Boyes also tweeted an unboxing video for the exclusive 20th anniversary limited edition PlayStation 4, showing what those lucky enough to get it can expect.

The box includes a Classic Grey PlayStation 4 console, a wireless Classic Grey DualShock 4 controller, as well as a PlayStation Camera and a vertical stand for the system.

A bit of history

The PlayStation came out at the end of 1994 in Japan, and it marked a new era for gaming worldwide. It was the first console to sell over 100 million units worldwide, a feat which it managed to accomplish almost 10 years after launch.

Its successor, the PlayStation 2, came out in Japan at the end of 2000, being backwards compatible with the PlayStation and becoming the best-selling console ever made, with an estimated total of 155 million units sold worldwide.

Now, Sony is once again in the lead in the current console war, with the latest entry in the PlayStation family, the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system, dominating its main competitor, Microsoft's Xbox One home console.

Since the debut of the black unit back at the end of 2013, Sony has also enabled its fans to get their hands on custom variants of the console, like the Glacier One edition, bundled with Activision's hugely popular sci-fi first-person shooter, Destiny.

Now, the company is offering a mere 12,300 fans the chance to nab a Classic Grey edition of the home console, celebrating 20 years of gaming together.
