Today, Sony announced that is had added the Xperia L smartphone to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) for Xperia devices.

Following the availability of the code for these handsets, developers can start building and flashing Android 4.4 KitKat on their unlocked Xperia L smartphones.

“This is the first time we’ve added support for a device with the 1 GHz Qualcomm MSM8230 dual-core chip,” a post on the Sony Mobile Developer blog reads.

The company also notes that there still are a variety of issues with the software, and that it is not yet suitable for everyday use. Furthermore, it explains that some functions such as Bluetooth and GPS are still disabled.

Even so, there are a variety of features that already work, including the possibility to make video calls or to browse the Internet using either a mobile network or a Wi-Fi connection.

Furthermore, the software allows those interested in taking it for a spin to take photos and shoot video clips. The LED light, NFC, and sensors are also partially working, it seems.

“As for all of our AOSP for Xperia devices, all collaboration and contributions are handled through the GitHub tool,” the aforementioned blog post explains.

Those who would like to learn more on how to get started with the newly released code should have a look at the readme files.

“Make yourself familiar with the code, and feel free to take a look at the ‘issue list’ to see where you might be able to help out and possibly add your own contributions to the code. And don’t forget to check out our other devices included in the AOSP for Xperia devices project,” the post continues.

To grab the available software binaries for the Sony Xperia L, simply head over to GitHub. You can also learn more on other Xperia devices available in AOSP via this page on the Sony Mobile Developer website.
