Sony might be known for making tablets and smartphones, but one area where it excels is photography. And once again, it appears that the company is looking to revolutionize the market by introducing a curved image sensor.

The advantages of this new technology are many, but first and foremost cameras using it will be able to deliver a sharpness never seen before around the corners. On top of that, the size of the lenses will be reduced.

But according to the latest information provided by trusted sources familiar with matter, a camera equipped with such a technology won’t be making it onto the market until 2015.

This device is believed to be called either RX2 or RX1 and will probably arrive alongside an Android smartphone boasting a 2/3-inch type curved sensor.

At this point, it seems like a logical move for Sony to introduce a successor to the RX1R compact camera that was launched back in 2013.

The RX2 camera announcement will be accompanied by a lens provided by Zeiss, which boasts a focal length of 35mm and maximum aperture of f/1.8. As far as the information goes, the lens is said to be very compact, so you can expect the camera to be quite lighter and reduced in size.
