Because, of course, they need an invention patent for a game controller that uses hands

Sony have put together a brand-new device and they've already filed the patent for the invention. The tip is brought by Siliconera and Sony's newest masterpiece appears to be some sort of game controller. The PlayStation 3 gadget is designed to be a one-hand device and any other details regarding it are virtually nonexistent. The patent was filed in the U.S. by Sony Computer Entertainment, which made sure to describe the device in the most generic way possible.

Sony's new inventions is, in their own words, a "hand held game controller." Since this is all the information they supplied on the product, it makes you wonder where the “invention” part is. So far, all current controllers are hand held so this must be Sony's attempt to show the world that they don't really feel the need to compete with Project Natal. And this must be the case, since Natal is the only thing it sets itself apart from, Microsoft's toy being the only project of a game controller that doesn't plan to sit in a gamer’s hand.

It looks like someone's either a little bit too competitive or they're trying to hide the fact that they feel uneasy about Microsoft's new motion sensing technology. Sony obviously want to put themselves in the same race as Project Natal but feel too awkward to accept it as a worthy rival. Since Sony decided to keep everything but the actual patent to themselves, everything is pretty much up for speculation. The shape of the controller looks very familiar somehow, but it's one of those things you just can't put your finger on, something from the deep space of Lords of Acid.

Siliconera noted that this could be a new quiz controller for an upcoming new title in Sony's Buzz! Series. This may sound downright ridiculous, building a controller especially designed for a quiz game, but again, it's Sony's fault. First, for teasing us with the device but giving no details, and second, for actually making a quiz game. Another possibility would be that this will be the “nunchuck” for the upcoming PS3 “wand” controller but Sony would know better than to file a patent for something that another company already uses. Even if they have all the legal stuff covered, it's more a matter of pride.
