Sony Computer Entertainment has offered little detail on a new initiative called the PSP Remaster Project, saying that it will allow interested developers to emulate all of the features of the PlayStation Portable handheld on the Sony home platform, the PS3.

Speaking to Famitsu Teiji Yutaka, who is one of the members of the Software Solutions division at Sony, has said, “We were developing this emulation platform and through it we came to realize that we might be able to get the PSP running in realtime on the PS3 without much problem. It was our talented engineers that made it happen.”

The software will be called the PSP Engine and it seems to be a cross between an operating system and an emulator, which allows for all of the PSP functions to be run on the better hardware of the PlayStation 3.

The developer added “We had things up and running on the PSP Engine around one and a half, two years ago. The HD rendering was in operation by then, too, and that’s when we began to remold the project into a sale able product.”

The developers have made sure that all the unique features that titles on the PSP had could be ported to the PS3 but also offered the tools needed to add more functionality, like making the emulated titles playable in full three-dimensional mode.

Sony has announced that it will be launching the PSP Remaster project with the well-known Monster Hunter 3rd , which has been one of the biggest seller on the handheld in the last few years.

It's not clear whether the new Sony initiative will also target the video games that are launched for the upcoming PlayStation Vita and the company is also not ready to talk about a clear launch schedule.
