Sony has made its latest Android-based flagship device, the Xperia S, available for purchase in the UK, and it also kicked off the marketing campaign for the handset.

The smartphone is now available through various wireless carriers and retailers in the country, and it appears that Sony wants to make sure it picks up Steam.

The vendor has reportedly partnered with Blippar for the marketing of this device in a new, unique manner. The Blippar Augmented Reality mobile application is the way in which the capabilities of Xperia S are showcased, and the idea appears amazing.

The mobile application is available for download via the Google Play store today, with support for all devices based on Android 2.2 or newer. The software requires an Internet connection to work.

The app is available only in beta at the moment, though it still looks great on the large screen of Sony’s new Xperia S smartphone.

As a recent article on The Next Web notes, the smartphone also made it to the cover of Metro on March 15th, as part of Sony's campaign. In fact, this is a special page, designed in collaboration with Blippar.

Users who download the application from the Google Play Store and have a look at the said page through it will be offered details on the core capabilities of the device.

“This is our new favourite Blipp – a brilliant and very cool use of the Blippar platform that really shows off the 3D and tracking capabilities of our technology,” says Jess Butcher, CMO of Blippar.

“In competitive markets like the mobile phone industry, brands need to stand out to get consumers’ attention and we think this is one of the most impactful Blipps we’ve worked on.”

You can have a look at the video embedded below to learn more on what the Xperia S can do, and on what devices with the application loaded on them can offer. The Metro issue featuring Xperia S can be seen via this link.
