With LocationFree TV

After the unfortunate events of last week (the launching of an illegal firmware and a trojan that transforms the console in a decorative object), Sony issued the third PSP firmware update.

This one, 2.5, is the third in less than two months. Sony issued a firmware update right after the company found out about the hackers' attempt to downgrade. Unlike that update, which only blocked hackers, the new version also includes a function which allows the PSP to receive the Sony LocationFree TV service.

So far, LocationFree TV, launched last month, has been a service which required a special receiving device, offered in the Sony stores for $1,499. Introducing this service for the PSPs is the latest trick with which Sony hopes to encourage users into downloading and installing the new update.

The upgrade also solves a few minor bugs tracked in Sony PSP's web browser and allows the internal clock to synchronize with Internet time servers.

Sony is waging a fierce battle against hackers, who are constantly trying to change the console so that they can run unauthorized applications.
