Sony Mobile recently released the promised Android 4.4 KitKat update for Xperia M2 and Xperia M2 Dual, and today the Japanese company made an unexpected announcement.

Apparently, Sony thinks you can’t have too many Xperia M2 models available on the market and has introduced yet another handset with the same name, but with slightly different features.

The new Xperia M2 Aqua is the next mid-range smartphone to be released by the company in various markets. The main difference between the previous models and the new one is the fact that Xperia M2 Aqua is a waterproof smartphone.

According to Sony Mobile, the Xperia M2 Aqua will be available for purchase beginning September in multiple markets including Latin America, Asia Pacific, and Europe. It will go on sale in two color versions: black and white.

Once again, Sony ignores the North American market, so fans living in this region shouldn’t expect the Xperia M2 Aqua to arrive in their countries anytime soon.

Unfortunately, there are no details on the Xperia M2 Aqua price tag, but the manufacturer claims that this is “the waterproof smartphone for everyone,” which might suggest that it will be quite affordable.

Anyway, let’s see what the Xperia M2 Aqua has to offer in terms of specs. First of all, the smartphone has been confirmed to ship with Android 4.4 KitKat operating system out of the box.

On the inside, the Xperia M2 Aqua will pack a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, an Adreno 305 graphics processing unit, and 1GB of RAM. The device will only have 8GB of internal memory, but users will be able to further expand storage up to 32GB via microSD card slot.

Sony Xperia M2 Aqua offers the highest waterproof technology rating (IP65/68) in a smartphone and NFC (Near Field Communication) technology.

On the back, the upcoming handset will boast an enhanced 8-megapxiel photo snapper with autofocus, LED flash, and full HD (1080p) video recording. The main camera features Sony Exmor RS for mobile image sensor. There’s also a secondary 1.1-megapixel camera on the front for video calls and selfies.

The Xperia M2 Aqua offers a wide range of connectivity options, such as LTE, 3G HSPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0, GPS with A-GPS, and 3.5mm audio jack.

The phone’s 2330 mAh battery has been rated for up to 640 hours of standby time or up to 11 hours of talk time, but it could last for more when STAMINA Mode is switched on.
