By definition, a photo is something people look at. However, in the case of digital photos, photographers generally have to use a computer in order to watch and organize a large number of photos, showcasing them directly on their HDTV being a more time-consuming task. And this is exactly the reason why the people over at Sony, who are actively involved in the digital photography market, have just announced the release of the HDMS-S1D Digital Photo Album, a device that allows users to archive, organize and view (in HD) all their digital photos.

Thus, the device has been equipped with an 80-GB HDD and is capable of connecting to a HD television via HDMI and can display up to 50,000 high resolution photos. Moreover, the new digital photo album includes several important connectivity options, including multiple flash memory card formats, CD, DVD, USB or Ethernet. Once imported, photo collections can be managed with the supplied remote control and the device's interface, namely they can be organized by date, special occasions such as birthdays and travel (using pre-selected icons), or into as many as 3,000 different photo albums. The digital photo album also provides the ability to review, edit, rotate, delete and arrange photos for a slideshow or digital scrapbooking with Sony's x-Application features. The photo managing x-Pict Story HD software creates rather high-quality slideshows, eliminating the need for PC-based photo editing. Slideshows can be created by selecting from 30 pre-loaded music tracks and transition styles. For personalization, users can add up to five songs from their own CDs and the software also allows for connection to a compatible printer for making prints of the photos or scrapbook pages directly from the device.

The HDMS-S1D Digital Photo Album uses Sony's face detection technology to locate faces in photographs and adjusts the slideshow transitions around the location of faces. Furthermore, the x-ScrapBook application uses face detection and event-clustering technology to make scrapbook-style layouts of photos with a common trait or pictures grouped by events such as a party or vacation. Moreover, users can always select and save certain photos on CDs, DVDs or flash memory cards, should they be required to do so.

The new Sony HDMS-S1D Digital Photo Album will hit the shelves (both online stores and normal outlets) towards the end of October at a MSRP of around 400 US dollars, which is a relatively OK price to pay for this thing, although one can always save up and purchase a multimedia computer instead.
