The DPF-V900, DPF-V700 and DPF-D70

As you might know from several of our previous articles on the subject, Sony has come up with quite a few surprises for this year's CES and PMA. However, it would seem that the Japanese company is not happy with simply allowing users to take very high quality photos, but it's keen on getting into just about every digital photography-related market segment, including one of the still rather "virgin" such areas, namely that of digital photo frames.

For this reason, Sony has just announced the development of a whole new brand of digital photo frames, dubbed S-Frame, which will debut with three models, the 9-inch DPF-V900 and the 7-inch DPF-V700 and DPF-D70. According to the company, all of these digital photo frame models have WVGA resolution (800 x 480 pixels) along with 16:9 aspect-ratio screens and are powered by an advanced image processor that scales and displays images up to 48 megapixels, making the frames capable of handling photos taken with the most advanced digital single reflex cameras.

And since we're on the subject of photos, it's important to mention the fact that all three S-Frame models support JPEG and RAW (SRF, SR2, ARW) image file formats, while the DPF-V900 and DPF-V700 frames also support TIFF and BMP file formats. Furthermore, these two models also incorporate Sony's already famous Bionz processor with face detection technology for faster processing speeds, as well as in-frame photo correction like focus enhancement, red-eye corrections and exposure adjustment.

The new digital photo frames from Sony provide quite a comprehensive set of connectivity options. Thus, much like most of the other devices of this type available on the market, the devices incorporate a memory card reader, compatible with the most popular card formats on the market, including here Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick PRO Duo, SD Memory Card, MMC, Compact Flash, Microdrive and xD-Picture Card.

Furthermore, the photo frames also sport an USB 2.0 interface, whilst the DPF-V900 and DPF-V700 digital photo frames are also Bluetooth-enabled (however, they do require a separate adapter). Both frames also feature built-in HDMI interfaces, which is really a first as far as digital frames are concerned, and also provide internal storage capabilities (512 MB for the DPF-V700 and DPF-V900, as well as 256 MB for the DPF-D70).

All the three new models are scheduled to hit the shelves at some point in March and will retail for around $250 (the DPF-V900), $190 (the PPF-V700) and $140 (the DPF-D70).
