While its Xperia X1 Windows Mobile 6.1 super-smartphone is getting closer and closer to a commercial release, Sony Ericsson has just announced the opening of submissions for the 2008 edition of its Content Awards. And in case you don't know what these awards are about, we'll tell you: the Swedish-Japanese company simply wants to honor "outstanding" mobile-related content, asking all developers out there to come up with new and cool applications and/or services.

Those who want to participate can register on the Sony Ericsson Content Awards website, starting today and up until November 30.

This year's edition of the Sony Ericsson Content Awards will require developers to concentrate on seven categories:

– Being Productive

– Going Green

In-Car Applications

Mobile Entertainment

Lifestyle Experiences

Themes & Graphics

Xperia X1 Panels, a category that should bring lots of cool content for the highly anticipated X1 touchscreen handset.

"Sony Ericsson is very proud to unveil its 2008 Content Awards and celebrate bringing the best and most innovative content from mind to market," stated Björn Ahlberg, head of Sony Ericsson Content and Services. "We highly value our relationships with content creators and developers, and as equal partners within the mobile ecosystem, together we can create unique propositions and experiences for consumers."

Roger Entner, senior vice president of communications sector at Nielsen IAG, added, "Through leveraging a diverse portfolio of tools and support, the global development community has been empowered by Sony Ericsson to create applications easily, quickly and securely that provide rich mobile experiences for consumers on their mobile phones. Sony Ericsson's Content Awards are testimony to the innovations that can benefit everyone within an open ecosystem."

The Sony Ericsson 2008 Content Awards finalists will be announced in December, while the winners should be presented during an official ceremony held on February 5 next year. The winners will get to participate in a two-day workshop, at the Sony Ericsson center from Lund, Sweden, and they will be internationally promoted by the giant telecommunications company.
