Everybody would love such a thing, except Sony

The PlayStation 3 is one of the most troubled consoles currently available on the market today, largely because, despite its superior hardware, high-definition capabilities and loads of other features that are present or will appear for it in the near future, it is more expensive than its two other main rivals, the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii.

Such a price difference translates into some not so big sales for publishers and developers that bring their titles to Sony's big black console. That is why a lot of representatives from companies such as Activision, Electronic Arts or Ubisoft, or specialized analysts like Michael Pachter have predicted that the Japanese company would surely slash the price of the PlayStation 3.

But even though almost the entire gaming industry deems this reduction a necessity and a certainty, Sony is still holding its ground, as it has just stated, through the voice of its senior vice president of marketing for the American branch, Peter Dille, that, “Everybody in the development community would love for the PS3 to be free, so they could just sell razor blades.”

So even though quite a lot of people have postponed buying a PlayStation 3 for when its price will be slashed, they will either have to buy it now or keep on waiting as Sony won't make any modification to the price of the console.

Hopefully, such a move won't backfire on the Japanese company as, although it has said that it wants to make a profit out of the PS3, without a doubt a price cut would have meant some high sales and profit, both of which Sony definitely needs in these troubled economic times.
