The DPF-D100 and DPF-D80 models

While Sony's experience in the field of digital photo frames is not a particularly vast one, the Japanese company has got all it takes to roll out some pretty high-end and, much like all Sony products, expensive products of this type. Now, that's not necessarily the case with the latest addition to Sony's S-Frame family of digital frames, the DPF-D100 and DPF-D80 models, which offer a host of interesting features without pushing the price limit too high.

Quite obviously, the screen represents the main point of attraction these digital frames have to offer. Thus, the new 10-inch and 8-inch digital photo frames (models DPF-D100 and DPF-D80) have SVGA resolution (800 x 600 pixels) LCD screens and are Sony’s first digital photo frames that offer a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Besides these high-end panels, the devices also have an advanced image processing feature that quickly decodes and displays images. The digital photo frames will display images that are up to 48 megapixels and/or files that are up to 100MB, and they work quite well with both JPEG and RAW (SRF, SR2, ARW) image file formats.

The S-Frame models offer convenient features including the auto orientation sensor, which automatically detects whether it has been positioned horizontally or vertically and then adjusts the display of the picture accordingly. We also have to mention here the 10 slideshow variations, clock and calendar views, and two index modes, so users can preview several photos at once. Plus, the device can be controlled from a distance by using the remote control included in the sales package.

Digital images can be loaded onto the internal memory of the digital photo frames from several types of flash memory cards, including Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick PRO Duo, SD Memory Card, MMC, Compact Flash, Microdrive and xD-Picture Card, as well as via a USB 2.0 interface. And since we've mentioned the internal memory, we should also point out the fact that the digital frames provide around 200 MB of built-in flash memory. Unfortunately, the DPF-D100 and DPF-D80 support neither Bluetooth nor Wi-Fi, which is a serious minus, compared to other products of this type available on the market.

The Sony DPF-D100 will arrive in November for around $280, but you can already pick up the DPF-D80 in stores right now, for just around $180.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there.
