Sony wants to blow your mind, in the cinema department
The ever-watchful Sony Alpha Rumors reports the PlayStation maker has plans of rolling out a competitor for the ALEXA beast. But if you thought the camera will be on par and shoot 6K, you’re quite wrong.
Sony ups the bar in its attempt to build a massive camera that will snap video at an incredible 8K. The ALEXA 65 has been barely introduced, but the camera is receiving positive reviews so the competition won’t just sit back and do nothing.
According to sources in the know, Sony is building a camera inspired by the design of the A-mount A99 coming with a vertical grip.
Naturally, don’t expect the shooter to be marketed for the mainstream consumer market, but for the broadcasting and cinematography niche, which is also a big part of the photo and video business.
Most specs of the 8K camera remain unknown
The Sony 8K camera sounds pretty amazing and it is. That’s why the Japanese maker still needs lots of time to work on its development. With this in mind, don’t expect the ALEXA competitor to make an appearance any time soon.
Word on the street says the 8K camera will arrive in the wild at the beginning of 2016, if the developing process goes well. However, if Sony hits some bumps, the launch of the product could be pushed back with several months.
Apparently, Sony has already demoed a prototype of the future camera with a possible major client – BBC.
According to information, the prototype has already been spotted at a BBC event and reports claim it looks very much alike the A99, which is Sony’s current flagship A-mount camera. Even so, we can’t hold our breath and say this is what the final version of the 8K camera will look like.
At this moment, lots of details are left out from the picture but more will become known as time goes by. Panasonic is also said to be exploring 8K territory, but information is even scarcer regarding the company’s efforts.
While we wait for the amazing 8K camera, you should know Sony is currently offering the 4K-ready Sony A75 which sells for around $2,500 / $1974.
