SEGA has announced a brand-new title in the Sonic franchise. This new, high-speed platformer is called Sonic Colours and will task Sonic with saving a colorful alien race from the evil plans of Dr. Eggman. The platforms targeted by SEGA are the Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo DS for a late 2010 release date. SEGA is promising that this new Sonic installment will revolutionize the series and will take full advantage both of the unique capabilities of the Wii and of the DS.

Gary Knight, senior vice president of marketing at SEGA, told the press that, “The vibrant alien world of Sonic Colours enables players to race at top speed through incredible looking planets, each with their own unique visual style. In addition to the classic Sonic game play style, the colorful new Wisp power ups offer a fresh new way of exploring these worlds and help make Sonic faster than ever before!”

The video game will be set in an outer-space amusement park where Wisps, an alien race, are kept as prisoners of Dr. Eggman. Gameplay novelties will be introduced as Sonic taps into the Wisps' colorful energy and receives new abilities and reaches higher speeds. The Wii version will combine both the classic 2D perspective and the more modern 3D view, while the DS version will use the console's two screens conjointly to supply this type of gameplay.

This is the second Sonic announcement to come from SEGA in a fortnight. Last week, the publisher stated that it had delayed the first Episode of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 to refine the gameplay, with a launch date aimed at the end of 2010. Along with this piece of news, an iPhone version was also said to be in the works now, besides the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii versions.
